Newborn stool with blood

Is it normal to have blood in the stool of a newborn?

Bloody stools in newborns are not uncommon during infancy. Chronic  bloody stools (recessive or dominant) will inevitably cause neonatal development to be slow or stagnant.

In severe cases, dizziness and fainting may occur and even affect heart function and mental development. Newborn feces with blood means that the blood of the newborn is discharged from the anus.

Blood in the stool is generally seen in lower gastrointestinal bleeding, especially in the colon and rectum, but occasionally upper gastrointestinal bleeding.  The color of blood in the stool depends on the location of the gastrointestinal bleeding, the amount of bleeding and the time the blood stays in the intestine.

If the stool contains more mucus or is mixed with blood, and the baby cries during the bowel movement, the newborn may have infectious diarrhea caused by bacterial dysentery or other pathogenic bacteria, and it should be seen in the hospital in time.

If the stool is red bean soup-like, dark red with malodor, it may be hemorrhagic necrotizing enteritis; if the stool is jam-colored, it may be intussusception; if the stool is black as tar, it may be bleeding from the upper digestive tract; If it is bright red bloody stools, most of them indicate that the blood comes from the rectum or anus.

Blood in the stool is also associated with blood disorders such as leukemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation, etc. Therefore, investigations are needed to rule out different causes of stool in the blood.

Causes and how to deal with newborn stool with blood

The baby swallowed the blood from the mother’s nipple rupture: during breastfeeding, especially in the early stage, the mother’s nipple is easy to rupture. The baby usually eats normally and grows normally, so parents don’t have to be nervous.

For small babies, most of the causes of baby’s intestinal damage are food, and the most common one is milk. Under the recommendation of the doctor, the mother should change the baby’s milk substitute to make the baby grow up healthily.

Disinfectants damage the intestine because  chronic disinfectant ingestion has become the culprit of damaging the baby’s intestine. This is because disinfectants are chemical substances that can damage the intestinal mucosa. After the baby is born, the antibodies brought from the mother can resist the general bacteria and will not easily get sick, so parents only need to use clean water to scrub.

The baby’s anal sphincter development is not mature enough and small cracks caused by the defecation process often occur, resulting in a small amount of blood in the stool. Apply a little ointment containing antibiotics to the anus, it will get better soon.

If the baby has diarrhea and blood in the stool, it may be diarrhea caused by many different infections by viruses or bacteria. At this time, parents must take the baby to the hospital for treatment.
